Martin Whittam is willing to accept commissions
My work is firmly rooted in the Northern Naive Tradition, influenced by the likes of L.S. Lowry, Tom Dodson, and Arthur Delaney.
Working primarily in watercolour, but also in oils, I portray the rhythms of everyday life through scenes that celebrate the character of towns, villages, and the people who inhabit them. My paintings present a world where architecture and community intertwine, each street and building rendered with a sense of individuality and warmth. The interplay of colour and light in my work conveys the subtle transitions of time—dawn, dusk, or the gentle aftermath of rain—while stylised figures and playful details express the vibrancy and stories of daily existence.
I am drawn to the way familiar places can feel both timeless and ever-changing, and I find inspiration in the small moments that define communal life: a conversation on a corner, the glow of a streetlamp, or the quiet companionship of a dog and its owner. My influences range from classic
