I have a fascination and awe of nature, weather, watching winter storms, and observing the universe through my telescope, being an amateur astronomer and member of C.O.S.M.O.S. Community Observatory, St. Martin’s Isles of Scilly, offering star gazing and solar observing sessions throughout the year, drawing what I see through the telescopes we have, especially the Moon.

I am a keen cyclist and organise long-distance cycle touring journeys, drawing and painting the landscapes and seascapes as I travel. My last tour was with my son and lasted nine months, three of which we spent in Iceland cycle touring the ring road and crossing the centre twice. This was a self-organised and a self-funded touring artist in residence, where I documented the journey through sketchbooks, post-tour paintings and created temporary stone balance sculptures along the way.

Having this constant interaction with nature has had a profound effect on my philosophical outlook. A view that developed

I view consciousness as the universe becoming self-aware that there is a deeply profound connection between consciousness and nature. In many ways, our modern world has succeeded in distancing the majority of people from nature and I believe this is to our great loss.

I do not view consciousness and nature as separate creations or as creations at all, rather as interconnected natural phenomena emerging through the natural evolution of the universe and the laws of nature. In such a philosophy, there is no reason to believe in supernatural or mythical beings, consciousness is the Universe becoming self-aware and that is beyond sublime, and that is beautiful enough and wonderful enough for me.

In essence, I paint and draw to celebrate nature, our existence, our connection to nature, this pale blue dot on which self-aware sentience emerged through evolution, to ask questions about nature of the universe.
